Emotional eating is a subject that is written about over and over. Emotional eating is considered the act of eating as a result of feelings. For example in our society we use things to celebrate. Many people when overwhelmed with happiness eat to celebrate it. Many people also use food to numb themselves from painful feelings and to comfort themselves. This is called emotional eating.

However there are also people who believe emotional eating doesn’t exist. What they see as emotional eating isn’t the fact that one overeats because they are upset, more so that they are eating because their body is craving nutrients. Feeling upset and off balance is a signal to the body that more food is required. This rings true when we remember times we had been hungry and haven’t eaten in several hours or nearly the entire day. We can be snappy or sensitive and on edge with our emotions. Once we feed our hunger we feel better and more balanced. In this sense emotional eating makes sense.

In terms of the typical definition of emotional eating, one will “overeat” as a result of feelings. Is this true? Well emotional eaters tend to be people who do not eat very well. Many emotional eaters don’t eat breakfast or have very light food in the beginning of the day. As a result emotional binges result near the end of the day as the stress of their job or someone upsetting them takes its toll. When we eat enough our ability to manage stress is much better and we are less likely to turn to food to deal with it. We aren’t really turning to the food because of the emotion more because the emotion has reminded us that we are off balance and need to eat more.

In this way it can be very clear that emotional eating can be rectified by simply eating enough and eating plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables. However in some cases it isn’t as simple as this and the notion of emotional eating does seem to exist. For example smells and different meals can remind us of our childhood and we often eat these foods in order to reminisce. Some foods also remind us of people – maybe our mother used to make us a beautiful lasagne and we want to reminisce as that person has died. This type of emotional eating is much harder to resist and overcome. It is only through understanding that not eating the food does not taint or belittle your memories that you can get past it.

It is also the biggest factor to overeating and if you don’t get a grasp of it and don’t recognize it, it will almost be impossible for you to lose weight. Emotional eating not only will contribute to weight issues but it also has other consequences to it. This article addresses some of these consequences to get you to think about why it is so important to overcome emotional eating.

1.	Bottling Up Feelings – Emotional eating is essentially a way to bottle up your feelings, to numb yourself so you don’t have to feel them. However, despite the stuffing you do, these feelings need to be addressed and they even demand it. You just keep forcing the food down to try and numb them out but they will keep coming back. The more food you eat, the more of a backlog you will get and a bigger pile of emotional issues to deal with. This is much scarier than dealing with one issue at a time and can make issues seem larger than life when they really aren’t The best thing to do is to deal with the feelings. At first you will have a gush of intense emotion because of the backlog you have created. But each time you deal with your feelings the easier and more manageable it comes. You will also grow as a person, be more confident and won’t have to rely on food to aid you any longer.

2.	It can damage relationships – Stress in your relationship can push you in the direction of food. Food is a great comfort after a fight or a relationship issue. The more you use food to numb yourself from relationship conflict, the more you will turn to it when it starts getting tough. Instead of working through your problems with your partner, you will neglect doing so in favor of numbing yourself with food. This will ultimately destroy your relationship. If you want any of your relationships to work and if you want to be happy, you have to face problems and work through them, not numb yourself and avoid them with food.

3.	It can stop you fulfilling your dreams – Many people feel frustrated and overworked in life. Food maybe your only reward in this world of work and drama. This reward often becomes habit and your habit of eating can get into the way of your ambitions and life goals. Instead of going out and fulfilling your life long dreams, instead food becomes your life fulfilment. Food is a quick instant fix to things but it rarely lasts for long and often results in feelings of guilt and depression. Don’t let it replace what you really want to do. Get it in control and reward yourself by working hard and achieving goals you have always wanted to.

Emotional eating affects us in more ways that just causing us to gain weight. We can become almost obsessed with food as it becomes a source of comfort. Unfortunately food will never fulfil you the way you are trying to get it to. In order to gain control of your life, weight and happiness, emotional eating has to be addressed. You have to stop craving emotionally.

You can stop overeating and you can stop cravings. It can be quite difficult but you can make life a lot easier by following the tips below.

1.	Eat a balanced diet – Many people find that they experience intense cravings by mid afternoon because simply put they have had a manic morning, skipped breakfast and have only eaten an apple for lunch! These intense cravings then spill over into the evening as your body tries to catch up with calories by searching for calorie dense foods which usually turn out to be the fattiest, heaviest foods around. If you want to avoid these you need to make a motivated effort to get in a proper breakfast, lunch and dinner. Making sure you nourish the body with nutritious foods regularly will stop these intense cravings.

2.	Help Suppress It – You could try things to put you off eating or giving in. Sometimes just brushing your teeth can help and other times sucking on a lolly is helpful. I used to crave right after dinner but have found that by simply having a lollipop I prevented myself from overeating and bingeing on other things. The distraction was also enough to let me get on with work.

3.	Do Something New – Some cravings are habit or boredom. Many of us come home from a hard day at work and veg out in front of the TV. We will eat as we watch because watching TV actually is boring and eating is something to do. So instead of trying to use the TV to relax (which it doesn’t do) do something else. Try being creative or exercising. You could draw, paint, learn a new instrument or go and try out a dance class or even learn a new language. Replace the time with a new habit and you will no longer crave.

4.	Drink Water – Sometimes we think we are hungry when really we are just dehydrated. In fact most people who live on a cooked food diet are dehydrated. We need to be drinking more water – so if in doubt drink.

5.	Wait it out – Sometimes just waiting 10-15 minutes is enough for the craving to go away. There are plenty of things you can do to distract yourself in this time. If you find it difficult to think of something make a list so that when you are stuck in a craving you can just pick something off the list to do. Once you get past it you will feel much more empowered and feel more confident in your ability to kick the next craving to the curb.

There are plenty of others things you can do to overcome cravings, but this are good starting points. Don’t let cravings get the better of you. They can be beaten and you don’t have to let them rule your life. Stop overeating and start making changes today.

Cravings can be more than just a little desire for chocolate or a particular “food”. Physical cravings to foods can be intense and lead to bingeing. There are 2 reasons for this. One is that we are hungry. When we go along while without food our body craves for the densest foods – your body may have associated calorie dense foods as burgers or fries. It just wants to get those calories in. The other reason is that we are simply addicted to food. A lot of the food we put into our body has chemicals within it that make it addictive. One of these is Heterocyclic Amines (HCAs).

Cheese contains morphine (yes really!) and chocolate of course has caffeine as well as sugar. They can send us into a downward spiral that is difficult to claw out of. However you can get out of it quite easily by making the right changes to your lifestyle.

First of all it is really important that you start consuming breakfast and start eating consistently. You have to make eating a priority otherwise you will find time and time again the evening will come and you will craving beyond belief and end up going on a massive binge. Of course though there are ways to calm that feeling down immediately too but the best thing to do is avoid it completely.
If you find yourself in an intense mess by the evening then its time to start eating fruit, This might puzzle you and you may be thinking that fruit is the last thing you would consider eating as it will make your cravings worse, but it won’t! It won’t as long as you eat enough. In tense times where I haven’t eaten all day the best thing to do is to get your blender out put a few cups of water in and blend it with 5-8 ripe bananas. Then drink! This will satisfy your hunger and stop the cravings.

Another tip is that it is always a good idea to drink water. When we are dehydrated we can feel less hungry which can lead to under eating and thus bingeing later on. Drinking throughout the day will help you maintain regular eating.
Lastly have more self-awareness. If you can be more intune with yourself you may realize that a lot of your eating isn’t hunger but emotional issues. Stress and upset can make us want to grab a doughnut. Excitement and happiness can also make us want to grab a doughnut. This is because society has placed food at the centre of celebrations and upsets. It is pretty much ingrained. Make an effort to acknowledge it and you will have more success overcoming cravings for good.

This article is about food cravings but specifically the physical side to food cravings as opposed to the emotional side and how you can stop cravings for food. For more information on the emotional side: emotional eating

When it comes to physical cravings for food, regardless of the food you crave, you can overcome them fairly easily. Most people just don’t eat properly. This is not to say that our bodies are searching for particular nutrients and we are depriving ourselves. Yes, there certainly could be some truth in that. We crave chocolate, carbs or whatever junk because that is what our body knows best. If it has been exposed to more fruits and vegetables you may search these out for specific nutrients as opposed to the junk, but your body doesn’t know about these so goes with what it knows first.

Anyway, the main reason it is important to eat properly is that by doing so you can diminish substantially, if not completely, the nasty side effects of eating junk. Junk foods put your body out of balance, but your body being the super powerhouse it is works around this and creats homeostasis despite the addiction you have created to the junk food. However as a result to keep homeostasis you have to keep eating the food. When you provide your body with the nutritious food, your body will start to come back into true balance and your cravings will diminish completely.

When your body has a sufficient and continuously flow of nutrients from easily digestible foods such as fruits ans greens, it will no longer crave.

Here are 3 tips to ensure you don’t crave again:

1. Make sure you eat breakfast

Breakfast sets you up nicely for the day. I know for me, if I don’t have my large fruit smoothie in the morning, I have major cravings by the afternoon that I find difficult to control. Your breakfast needs to be full of fiber and have plenty of nutrients to satisfy and satiate you. A large fruit smoothie works great for me.

2. Don’t skip meals.

No matter how busy you get, don’t skip meals. When you do you leave yourself opento major craving episodes and potentially bingeing.

3. Incorporate more fruits and vegetables into your diet.

Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables and you will crave less. One tip is to eat as much fruit as you desire before each meal. Not only will you be providing more nutrients to your body quickly and easily but this will also make it less likely for you to want that extra something something after your meal. Think of it as having your dessert first

It can be very hard to stop eating junk food. The worse time for junk food cravings tend to be in the evening and leading up towards bedtime. There are many reasons for this. Most people become bored after work as they sit down and watch TV. The boredom can lead to eating junk.

Many people find they can’t stop eating chocolate and so conclude they are addicted. But is there any truth in chocolate being addictive or are we just too weak to resist it? Well, the truth is, chocolate is addictive in 2 ways. Chocolate can be physically and emotionally addictive.

Physical Addiction

Chocolate Targets The Same Spot In Your Brain As Heroin

Although chocolate doesn’t affect you as strongly as heroin, it still affects your brain and you can still become addictive as you may well know.

On top of having opiate properties, chocolate also contains caffeine, theobromine (a strong stimulant similar to caffeine that affects the nervous system, particularly the heart), phenylethylaminphy (an amphetamine-like substance) and also traces of compounds similar to THC (the active ingredient in Marijuana).

So as you can see chocolate is full of addictive properties. But chocolate also contains sugar, milk and dairy products which also have highly addictive properties.

The best way to overcome these issues is to quit cold turkey but also to make it easy to quit cold turkey, you need to nourish your body properly. When you eat healthily and the right food you will not have intense cravings.

Chocolate can also, of course, be emotionally addictive. Like many other foods, chocolate is frequently used to comfort us.

Emotional Addiction

Emotional addiction to chocolate involves using chocolate in times of stress, boredom, depression and to cope with life.

To determine whether you are an emotional eater read this article: Are You An Emotional Eater? 6 Signs of Emotional Eating

If you still are unsure, take a few days to observe yourself and write down what triggers your cravings for chocolate. If they are related to stress or emotion, then you know you have some emotional eating tendencies at the very least!

The best way to deal with emotional eating is:

1. Become aware – by doing the observation task above you will know what your craving triggers are.

2. Learn to do something else to unwind instead of eating – To help you do this you can spend time writing a list. Sometimes having time alone to simply feel the emotions is all you need, other times you may feel a walk is more helpful to you. If you find that you are bored in the evenings and this is a time you will eat the most, then being creative or being active will better suit you. Write a list of things you have always wanted to do or activities that will satisfy your creativity. Make your lists specific to the emotions that trigger you chocolate cravings.

3. Get support – sometimes its simply not enough to work on it yourself and you may need someone to talk through your feelings to stop you reaching for food. Try to find someone supportive. Alternatively a great website for emotional eating which also has a forum is ShrinkYourself.com. ShrinkYourself.com also has lots of useful articles on emotional eating and offers a great 12 week intensive emotional eating program if you find you can’t cope alone. For more information about this program Emotional Eating Program.

Hopefully this should be enough information to get you started on your road to overcoming chocolate addiction.

This can be quite difficult as most people crave salt all the time – they are addicted. Salt has overexcited their taste buds so much that food becomes tasteless without it. But if you cut salt out of your diet completely, you can restore your taste buds and start enjoying “plain” foods again. And giving up salt doesn’t have to be hard either.

Cheese addiction is something serious and isn’t just as simple as a silly craving…

The Western world consumes a lot of meat and dairy. These items are no longer luxuary but staples of the Western diet. Most people eat meat and dairy everyday and many have at least one component in all their meals.

Cheese, which is more concentrated than dairy, is also an increasingly used food item. Many people eat this daily and find it difficult to cut down. For some extremists, they eat it for every meal because they can’t stop their persistent cravings for it. This is because they are addicted.

In 1981, Eli Hazum et al discovered traces of a chemical in cow’s milk that was fairly similar to morphine. After putting this chemical through several tests they discovered that in fact it was morphine. Morphine is an addictive opiate, so what is it doing in cow’s milk?

Cow’s produce morphine in order to create a calming effect on their young. This makes sure that their young bond with them and that their young continue to feed.

However, milk contains more than just morphine, it also contaisn casein, which when broken down in digestion releases a lot of opiates! In cheese, casein is in a much higher concentration so cheese can be far more addictive than milk.

You can overcome it though and with as little pain as possible. You just need to nourish your body properly. Eat very well and don’t go too long in between meals. When you eat the right nutrients, your cravings will diminish considerably allowing you to overcome them easier.

Make sure you have a nutritious breakfast as this will help prevent strong cravings later in the day. A tip to get you started in the right direction is to eat as much fruit as you desire before each meal. This will satisfy you enough not to overeat and will prevent cravings.

Reducing your dairy intake or at least cutting out cheese will help wade off cravings. In the long run though, it may be best to cut out cheese for the time being until you have overcome your strong cravings. Eating even a tiny amount, many people find will just send them into a binge. The first bite is easier to resist than the second, third or fourth!

Emotional eating also needs to be considered when conquering any type of craving. Most people eat for emotional reasons and this is normal due to the society we live in (we tend to use in our society food for celebration, grief and socializing). To discover if you are an emotional eater here is an article on 6 signs of emotional eating to help you get started.

If you find that you fit the pattern, you may need some help to overcome this. Some people have a mild case of comfort eating and can usually bring themselves to observe and face the emotions they are trying to bury. Some need an extended plan and help. A great resource for help with emotional eating is www.ShrinkYourself.com

You can overcome it, the first step is to accept that you have a problem and the second is to want to do something about it.
